Katie Sanders was the mother of Charles Ray Cooper. She was also known as Mama Katie. Born in 1902 in Colorado, Texas, she was the daughter of an enslaved father named Robert Lee Sanders. Mama Katie loved to fish. That was her favorite food to eat. She would walk up and down the street talking with her two best friends in Groesbeck, Texas. She was very much a family person. She had 4 children by her husband Wilmer Cooper. Her nickname was Sang. That’s what her sisters and brothers called her. She would always say “Keep living.” You never saw her angry or ever heard her complain about pain. She was known to cook fish, cabbage, and cornbread. She always crossed her legs and she would always hum.
